Hot Trends in remodeling: Give your Kitchen and Bath a face lift

I think we all know by now that updating a kitchen or bath can add about 20% value to our home. The word “update” automatically makes us think of granite and stainless steel appliances, right? for all of us who are tired to hear about granite, 1 1/4 inch or not, here is a list of “hot” countertops worth remodeling and showing off with.

  • Concrete - many love it because it can be molded in various shapes and cast in large sizes without seams. Cracks and stains easily and it is more expensive.
  • Corian - is an acrylic rather than a natural material and it is available in many colors and patterns. It can be fused in large expanses. Stain resistant and cheap
  • Quartz - is a green man made material that is strong, durable, consistent in color and less porous than most stones. It cost the same as granite.
  • Slate - comes in different colors and shorter slabs, yet it is not a durable as granite and pricier.
  • Stainless Steel- Popular in “chef kitchens” it is heat resistant and nonporous, but it scratches easily and is pricer than some stones.
  • Cast Glass - is the “hottest” new look. Colorful, luminescent and nonporous, it requires very little maintenance. Expensive!
  • New Metals - Pewter, antique bronze and copper are gaining popularity. They scratch easily but they can be hammered, oiled or brushed for different looks.
  • Pyrolav - is made from lave stone that has been enameled and fired. It is chip-resistant, nonporous and available in custom colors. Very Expensive!
  • Paper Composites - are made of layers of paper held together with resin. They come in great colors, have a leathery look and are nonporous.
  • Aluminum shavings - recycled aluminum shavings come in rich colors and don’t require sealing. Same price as quartz.

I think it is great to stand out. So, go ahead, start remodeling and let me know if you come across other funky materials that can be used as countertops or anywhere else in your remodeling project.
